Free agency is quickly approaching in a few weeks on March 11th. The Jaguars likely won’t be as active this year as they have been in previous years due to the cap situation. Right now, the Jaguars are currently 4,006,864 over the cap which is in the negatives. The Jags will likely cut a few players like Carlos Hyde, Malik Jackson, and Tashaun Gipson to free up a lot of cap, allowing to sign a couple quality players. I’ll list five free agents, who I think would be a good fit for the Jaguars below.
1.) Jesse James, Steelers TE
It was reported yesterday from draftanalyst.com’s Tony Pauline that he’s been hearing two teams with a lot of interest in Steelers tight end Jessie James are the Bills and the Jaguars. In my opinion, this move would make alot of sense for the Jags. James has been pretty solid in his time in Pittsburgh catching 30 passes for 423 yards and 2 TD’s in 2018 and tight end is a big position of need.
2.) Nick Foles, Eagles QB
There has been alot of talk of Nick Foles to the Jags ever since the season has ended. The Jaguars are considered the team to beat for Foles according to many analysts, since they brought in his former QB coach John Defilippo as the new offensive coordinator and have a big need for QB. Foles had his best season under Defilippo filling in for Carson Wentz and ending up winning super bowl MVP. With the contract Foles will get in free agency, I think it’s a big risk for the Jaguars to take because Foles has only been successful in 2013 for the Eagles and in 2017, 2018. He had stints with the Chiefs and Rams before coming back to the Eagles but never really separated himself and became a starter. I would prefer if the Jags signed someone like Ryan Tannehill or Teddy Bridgewater and traded up for Dwayne Haskins in the draft but it’s alot easier said than done. It’ll be interesting to see what direction the Jags decide to go in for a Quarterback.
3.) Mark Ingram, Saints RB
With Carlos Hyde and T.J Yeldon most likely leaving in free agency, the Jaguars will be looking into adding another running back to pair with Leonard Fournette. Mark Ingram would be the perfect complement for Fournette and the Jaguars. So far in 2 year career, Leonard Fournette isn’t someone you can count on. Fournette has been suspended twice in his career and missed half of 2018 due to injuries. Once Fournette went out in 2018, the Jaguars struggled and didn’t have anyone else to count on. Ingram is a player that could come in if Fournette is unavailable and perform at a high level. Ingram is also a good 3rd down back as well and pretty good as a receiver which would replace T.J Yeldon. Running backs aren’t as highly priced as before so you could probably get Ingram without having to spend alot especially when a star like Leveon Bell is on the market.
4.) Denzel Perryman, Chargers LB
This is a move that would make alot of sense and I woud LOVE. The Jaguars run defense struggled at times in 2018, ranking 19th in the NFL. Adding a player like Denzel Perryman would instantly upgrade the Jaguars run defense. It would allow the Jags to move Myles Jack back to strong side linebacker on running situations and play middle linebacker on passing situations like he did in 2017 when he had his season in the NFL. Leon Jacobs impressed and played well at times but Perryman would take the defense back to the defense we saw in 2017 and improve the Jaguars run defense dramatically.. Another reason why this move would make alot of sense is because he’s played in Gus Bradley’s defense for the Chargers which is the same defense that Todd Wash runs. Perryman is one of the better run stopping linebackers in the league but has battled injuries throughout his career, which is the reason the Jags may be able to get him for a good price.
5.) Lamarcus Joyner, Safety
The Jags could possibly be parting ways with safety Tashaun Gipson. Lamarcus Joyner could be a good replacement for the Jags at free safety. Joyner is only 5’8 but probably one of the hardest hitters in the league. He came into the league and played nickel for the Rams his first 3 years than played free safety once Wade Phillips became Defensive coordinator. Joyner is someone that could play center field for the Jags and I think would be an upgrade over Gipson. The free agency class for safety is loaded with guys like Earl Thomas, Landon Collins, Adrian Amos, and Ha-Ha Clinton Dix out there so someone like Lamarcus Joyner could be someone you can get for cheap.
